Youth drama, drawing classes, pinhole camera workshops, tea parties and film screenings - the Common Academy of Art means a packed week at Workshop 1a from 4-7 August.
Some quick shots from my meeting with Dan @artistsmakers Thompson at Workshop 1a in Shoreham yesterday. Planning exhibitions, workshops, projects… The Common Academy are running a series of workshops & events here soon, details to follow. Revving up for the Summer…
The Common Academy of Art will be a temporary art school popping up in an empty shop in Shoreham-on-Sea this August. The timetable of the Academy will be composed of activities proposed and led by anyone with a great idea. Thanks to a bursary from American Express and other fund raising activity we are able to fund materials and equipment to facilitate all sorts of ideas. Mornings and afternoons will be mainly aimed at children, young people and families, whilst the evenings will be reserved for screenings, talks and more grown up classes.
I am looking for anyone who would like to give a talk or presentation during one of the evening sessions. Talks can be as long or short as you like - 5 minutes? 2 hours? - and be on any subject. We will have projection equipment and WiFi available too.
As the Common Academy of Art is an art school talks on visual art, literature, media, music and performing arts would be fantastic, though please don’t feel limited to these areas. Local history, travel essays, arts education, the current issues faced by the arts, empty shops and regeneration, craft, gardening, the day you met 5 people called Gladys. Anything! If you have an idea for a talk that could interest, inspire, inform and/or entertain then I’d love to hear it.
The Academy will take place over five days, from August 3rd to 7th. Although I can’t offer payment for contributors I can pay for travel costs and hopefully an interesting and unusual evening.
If you would like further information about the project or want to propose an idea then please email me at TheCommonAcademy@gmail.com. You can also keep up to date with developments on our blog, commonacademy.blogspot.com and follow us on Twitter, @commonacademy
We’ve had a variety of people working at Workshop 1a since we opened over a year ago; we’ve decided to make more space available and will be building some desks from recycled vintage trestle tables soon. Want your own desk space at our shop in Shoreham for £60 a month? Or want access to use our shared desks? Get in touch.
On 12th and 13th March Workshop 1A in Shoreham-by-Sea plays host to an eclectic selection of mono and colour photography by Andrew Barns and Justin Sainsbury. Unposed and irreverent, the pictures take a humorous look at the behaviour of enthusiasts enjoying their hobbies and everyday life played out on the street. Open Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm
Supported by the Empty Shops Network
My day has been lost to The State of the Arts (#SOTA11) Debate a conference hosted by ACE National and the RSA. Like many people actually working in the arts (a huge, eclectic and diverse sector) I couldn’t afford to attend and the actual conference is largely full of the heavy weight art…
Learn pattern-cutting with experienced seamstress and artist Elizabeth Allen.
Two introductory sessions take place on Saturday 26th February and Saturday 5th March. Friendly and informal, ample tea and coffee and all materials will be provided.
Email elizabethallenartist@gmail.com for more information or to book a place.
Inspired by the Travelling Pantry workshop from Social Spaces and in particular by the Mensheds movement in Australia, local residents and the Alternative Learning Community have set up a new project for men, and Workshop 1A are pleased to give them a space:
